You can easily insert and edit tables in Google Docs. One of the best things about Google Docs is that it gives you various options for formatting your tables. You can change everything from the number of columns to the border colors of the table. In this article, we will be focusing on how to change the heights of the rows of tables in Google Docs.
You might want to have different row heights for different rows of your table. For example, you might want the height of the first row (the heading row) to be higher than the height of the other rows. This allows you to use a bigger font size for the text in the cells of the first row.
Another great thing about Google Docs is that it gives you multiple ways of doing the same thing.
5 methods you can use to customize the heights of table rows in Google Docs:
- Using the gridlines on the table
- Right clicking and going to Table properties
- Opening Table properties by going to the Format tab
- Right clicking and using Distribute rows
- Using Distribute rows by going to the Format tab
With that introduction, let’s learn the steps for customizing row height.
Method 1: Using the gridlines on the table
The first method involves using gridlines and anchors on tables to adjust the row height. When you hover your cursor over a gridline on the table, an anchor should appear. You can just drag this anchor to adjust the size of the cell.
The benefit of this method is that it is convenient. It takes less time and effort than the other methods. However, one downside is that you cannot precisely specify the row height. You would have to adjust the size based on the looks of the table.
Step 1: Open your Google Docs document.
(Optional) Step 2: Insert a table.
This step is optional. You can skip this step if you already have a table in your document.

Step 3: Use the gridlines and anchors to change the row height.
Hover your cursor over the gridline for a particular row. An anchor should appear. It looks something like this:
You can drag this anchor up and down to change the row height.
You can also change the heights of multiple rows at once. To do this, select the rows whose heights you would like to change. For example:
Then, drag the anchors on the borders of the rows to adjust their height.
Method 2: Right clicking and going to Table properties
The next method involves using the Table properties window.
The benefit of this method is that it allows you to precisely specify the height of your rows. However, this method is not that useful if you don’t have a specific number for the desired row height. In this case, you might be better off using the first method.
Step 1: Right click on your table.
Go to your table and right click on it. This will open a long drop down menu.
Step 2: Click on the Table properties option.
In the drop-down menu, you should see the Table properties option (somewhere in the middle). Click on this option to open the Table properties window.
Step 3: Enter the minimum row height.
One of the headings in the Table properties window is Minimum row height. This allows you to specify the minimum height that all the rows of your table need to have. Once you specify the minimum row height, you can use the gridlines to increase the height of your rows but not decrease it.
Make sure that there is a check in the box in front of the Minimum row height. Then, enter a number in the blank.
Step 4: Click on ‘OK.’
Finally, click on the ‘OK’ option at the bottom right corner of the window. This will close the Table properties window.
Make sure to finalize the minimum row height before closing the window.
Method 3: Opening Table properties by going to the Format tab
This method is similar to the previous one. The only difference between this method and the previous method is that in this method, we will be using the Format tab to open the Table properties window whereas in the previous method we right clicked on the table.
Step 1: Click on the Format tab at the top left corner of the screen.
The Format tab is located at the top left corner of the screen (next to the Insert tab). Click on it to open the Format menu.
Step 2: Click on or hover over the Table option.
Towards the bottom of the Format tab, you should find the Table option. Click on or hover over it to open another smaller drop down menu.
Step 3: Click on the Table properties option.
The last option in the new drop down menu is Table properties.
Click on it to open the Table properties window.
Step 4: Enter a number for the minimum row height.
The Table properties window allows you to change various properties of your table, such as its alignment. One option is the Minimum row height option, which allows you to specify the minimum height for the rows of your table. Since this is the minimum height, you can later increase the height of your rows, but you cannot decrease them.
First, make sure that the box in front of Minimum row height is checked. Next, enter a number in the blank next to the option.
Step 5: Click on ‘OK.’
Click on ‘OK’ at the bottom right corner of the screen to apply your changes and close the Table properties window.
Method 4: Right clicking and using Distribute rows
This method is different from the previous methods. Distributing rows allows you to make the height of all the rows of your table the same. Hence, you don’t have to manually change the height of your rows and make sure that they are the same. The Distribute rows option automatically does this for you. Use this method only if you want the heights of all your rows to be the same.
Step 1: Right click on the table.
Go to your table and right click on it to open a long drop down menu.
Step 2: Click on the Distribute rows option.
Towards the bottom of the drop down menu, you should find the Distribute rows option. Click on this to automatically make the heights of all the rows of your table the same.
Method 5: Using Distribute rows by going to the Format tab
This method is similar to the previous method. The only difference between this method and the previous one is that in this method, we use the Distribute rows option by going to the Format tab. In the previous method, we used the Distribute rows option by right-clicking on the table.
This method is slightly longer than the previous one as we have to go to the Format tab.
Step 1: Click on the Format tab at the top left corner of the screen.
The Format tab is located at the top left corner of the screen. Click on it to open the Format tab. But first, make sure that your cursor is on the table. You can do this simply by clicking on the table.
Step 2: Click on or hover over the Table option.
Towards the bottom of the Format menu, you should find the Table option. Click on or hover over it to open a smaller drop down menu.
Step 3: Click on the Distribute rows option.
Towards the bottom of the new drop down menu, you should find the Distribute rows option. Click on it to automatically make the heights of all the rows of your table the same.
