How to change row height in Google Sheets

There are times when you have to enter large text in a cell. And when you have to insert multiple lines in such cases, all the lines other than the first one get hidden.

Row height is changed in such cases to make the entire content visible in the cell. This article elaborates on how to do the same.

2 methods of changing row height in Google Sheets:

  • Changing row height by right-click
  • Changing row height by drag-and-drop

Method 1: Changing row height by right-click

Step 1: Open your Google Spreadsheet.

Open a new spreadsheet, or open an existing one in which you want to adjust the row height.

Step 2: Select the row(s) to reset the size.

Select the row that you want to adjust the height of.

If you want to adjust the height of multiple rows which are together, select them all by dragging the cursor.

To select rows that have other rows in between, press Ctrl on the keyboard and click on the individual rows. If you have selected a wrong row, click on it again while still pressing Ctrl to unselect it.

Step 3: Right-click and select Resize the row.

After selecting a row, right-click on the row heading from the mouse and choose the option Resize the row. In case of multiple rows, choose Resize rows. Here, the range of rows will show up.

For example, if you have selected rows 7 – 12, the option will be Resize rows 7 – 12.

Step 4: Specify the row height.

After step 3, a dialog box will show up. If you selected one row, say 8, the dialog box will be Resize row 8.

If you selected multiple rows, say 7 – 12, the dialog box will be Resize rows 7 – 12.

Here you can decide on the row height yourself, or let the system adjust the height automatically.

To change the row height yourself, click on Specify row height. Then, enter the number of pixels you want in the selected row(s). This can be done before or after entering the data.

Fit to data will automatically adjust the height of the row(s). The system figures out the height of the selected row required, so it works only after entering the data.

Step 5: Click on OK.

After you enter the row height or let the system do it, all you have to do is to click on OK. The new row height will be applied in your sheet. If you selected multiple rows, the new height will be applied to all such rows.

Method 2: Changing row height by drag-and-drop

Step 1: Open your Google Spreadsheet.

Open a new spreadsheet or open an existing one to change row height.

Step 2: Select the row(s) to reset the size.

Repeat step 2 mentioned in the previous method to select the row(s) that you want to change the height of.

Step 3: Drag the blue line below the row heading.

Below the row heading that you selected, you will find a thick blue line. Place your mouse there. When you do that, the cursor will convert into a vertical arrow. Click on the blue line and drag your mouse down, and the place you will drop it will be the new row height of the selected row.

If you have selected multiple rows, place your mouse below any of the selected row headings. Just like in the case of one row, a thick blue line will be visible there and the cursor will become a vertical arrow.

The place where you drop the mouse will be the height of the respective row. But because you have selected many rows here, the height you choose for one row will be the height of all of them.

Conclusion

You can adjust any row height in Google Sheets as many times as you want by following any of the two methods.
