Let’s see how to underline text within a cell. This is simple.
1.1 Underlining the entire string
To underline a text string follow the steps given below.
Step 1: Select text to highlight.
Select the text that you want to underline or click on the cell.
Step 2: Underlining the text.
Now click on Format on the menu and click on Text. Click on Underline. Alternatively, press Command + U on a Mac and Ctrl + U on Windows based OS if you want to use shortcuts.
You will see that the text gets underlined.
1.2 Underlining multiple strings in different cells
Say that you have to highlight text within multiple texts in different cells. There’s an easy way to do this instead of doing it one by one.
Step 1: Select text to highlight.
Select the text that you want to underline or click on the cells.
Step 2: Underlining the text.
As before, click on Format on the menu and click on Text. Click on Underline. You can press Command + U on a Mac and Ctrl + U on Windows based OS as shortcuts.
You can see that the selected text strings have been underlined.

Say that you have to highlight a specific part of the text string within a cell.
Step 1: Select text to highlight.
Select the part of the text that you want to underline.

Method 2: Underlining the cell itself
Another way to underline within a Google Sheet is to add a bottom border to a cell. We can also use a horizontal border in case we wish to underline multiple cells.
2.1 Underlining one cell
To underline a cell with a bottom border follow the steps given below.
Step 1: Select text to highlight.
Select the cell that you want to underline.
Step 2: Underlining the cell.
Here we navigate to the cell borders icon on the menu bar. Next we select the type of border and click on the double underline stroke at the bottom.
Lastly, click on the bottom border option.

2.2 Underlining multiple cells at once
Step 1: Select text to highlight.
Select the cells that you want to underline and an extra cell right below the cells that you want to underline.
Step 2: Underlining the cell.
Navigate to the cell borders icon on the menu bar.
Select the type of border and click on the double underline stroke at the bottom.
You get the desired result as follows:
If you need to double underline, just modify the cell underlining method with the type of border that you choose.
