How to Change Background Color of a Slide in PowerPoint

By default, PowerPoint offers a white background for all slides. But, you may want to change the background color for better aesthetics.

PowerPoint offers many choices for changing the background color. You can replace it with:

  • Solid Fill — Fill the background with a solid color.
  • Gradient Fill — Fill the background with a color that changes its intensity gradually.
  • Picture or Texture Fill — Fill the background with a chosen picture or texture from a file.
  • Pattern Fill — Fill the background with a pattern.

Step #1: Open PowerPoint

Open your PowerPoint presentation.

Navigate to the slide where you want to change the background.

Step #2: Open the Format Background dialog

Click on the Design tab on the top menu bar to change the ribbon.

In the section Customize, click on Format Background.

The Format Background dialog will open on the right-hand side of the slide.

Step #3: Change the background

A. Solid color as background

Click on Solid Fill.

Click on the Bucket icon on the right-hand side of Color.

A color selection menu will open.

Click on the color you want.

The background color of the slide will change according to your choice.

B. Gradient of a color as background

Click on Gradient Fill.

Additional menu items will appear.

Select from the menu items.

The background color of the slide will change according to your choice.

C. Picture or texture as background

Click on Picture or Texture Fill.

Additional menu items will appear.

Select from the menu items.

Click on Insert for selecting a picture.

Alternately, click on the Texture button for inserting a texture.

Make additional selections from the menu items.

The background color of the slide will change according to your choice.

D. Pattern as backgound

Click on Pattern Fill.

Additional menu items will appear.

Select from the menu items.

The background color of the slide will change according to your choice.

Step #4: Apply or reset

Your above choice affects only the present slide.

To apply to all slides in the presentation, click on the Apply to All button at the bottom of the dialog box.

To reset the background to white, click on Reset Background.

Step #5: Return to slide

After completing the above steps, click on the X on the top right-hand side of the dialog box to exit.
