How to download or save images from Google Docs (S)

It is easy to add images to Google Docs. You can simply copy-paste an image to your Google Docs document. You could also upload it from your computer, Google Drive or other sources.

However, it’s not that easy to download an image from your Google Docs document. You cannot simply right click on the image and save it to your computer. So, how exactly do you download or save an image from Google Docs?

Thankfully, there are several methods you can follow to do that. In this article, we will be providing the steps for each of these methods.

Specifically, the following are the four methods we will be talking about in this article.

4 Ways to download Images from a Google Doc

  • Publishing your document to the web
  • Downloading your document as an HTML file
  • Saving your images to Google Keep
  • Using an add-on

Note that this article is written keeping complete beginners in mind. Hence, you don’t have to have prior knowledge of Google Docs to follow along!

Let’s get started.

Method 1: Publishing your document to the web

The first method involves publishing your document to the web and downloading your image from there.

This method is simple to follow and doesn’t take a lot of time. We would recommend using this method if you don’t have a lot of images to download from your Google Docs document (generally, less than 5-6 images). This is because you have to manually save the images to your computer, which is time-consuming to do if you have a lot of images.

If you do have a lot of images to download, we would recommend that you follow the second method.

With that introduction, here are the steps for this method.

Step 1: Open your Google Docs document.

First, open the Google Docs document that contains the image you want to download or save. You can do this by going to the Google Docs homepage at docs.google.com, then selecting one of the documents under ‘Recent documents.’ Make sure that you are signed in to your Google account first.

If you want to create a new document (e.g. to copy and paste images from another document), you can click on the plus sign at the top of the screen to create a blank document. Another option is to choose from one of the several templates Google Docs offers for reports, notes, etc.

Step 2: Click on the ‘File’ tab.

Click on the ‘File’ tab, located in the top left corner of the screen. It is the very first tab in the toolbar. Clicking on it will open a drop down menu.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Publish to the web’ option from the drop down menu.

In the ‘File’ drop down menu, click on the ‘Publish to the web’ option. A new window should appear on your screen:

Click on the ‘Publish’ option. This will prompt a dialogue box from your system. Confirm that you want to publish the document.

Step 4: Open the link in a new tab.

Once your document is published (after you confirm that you want to publish it), Google Docs will show a link on the screen. Copy this link and open it in a new tab.

Step 5: Download your images.

Once you’ve opened the published document in a new tab, you can download the images. Right click on the image and select ‘Save image as…’ Enter a name for your image and save it to your computer.

(Optional) Step 6: Stop publishing your document.

Once you’re done downloading all the images from the document, you can also stop publishing it. Go back to the Google Docs page for this document, click on ‘Published content and settings’ and click on the ‘Stop publishing’ option in the window.

Method 2: Downloading your document as an HTML file

This method is ideal for documents that contain a lot of images. This is because when you download your document as an HTML file, a separate folder containing all the images will be created, saving you time and effort.

Below are the steps for this method.

Step 1: Click on the ‘File’ tab.

Click on the ‘File’ tab in the top left corner of the screen (it is the first option in the toolbar). This will open the ‘File’ drop down menu.

Step 2: Click on or hover over ‘Download.’

Click on or hover over the ‘Download’ option in the menu. This should open up another drop down menu.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Web Page’ option.

From the ‘Download’ drop down menu, click on the ‘Web Page’ option. A zip file will be downloaded on your computer.

Step 4: Open the zip file.

Next, unzip the zip file by clicking on it. Make sure that you have a zip converter installed on your computer (most computers already have it installed).

Doing so will generate a folder on your computer. When you open the folder and you should see another folder titled ‘images’ containing all the images in your document.

This is another convenient method of saving or downloading your images from Google Docs, especially if you are a regular user of Google Keep.

Here are the steps for this method.

Step 3: Download the image from Google Keep.

To download the image, right click on it and select ‘Save image as…’ Add a name to your image and click on ‘Save.’ You should now be able to find it on your computer.

(Optional) Step 4: Remove the image from Google Keep.

Once you’re done downloading all the images, you might want to remove them from Google Keep. to do so, click on the three vertical dots at the top right corner of the image and select the ‘Delete’ option from there. You can also archive the image if you want.

This tab is located in the top left corner of the screen. Click on it to open the ‘Add-ons’ drop down menu.

Step 2: Click on ‘Get add-ons’ and search for ‘image extractor.’

Step 4: Start using the add-on.

Close the ‘Add-ons’ window and click on the ‘Add-ons’ tab once again. In the drop down menu, click on the ‘Image Extractor and Remover’ option, then ‘Start.’

This will open a new window to the right. Click on the last option from this window (‘Don’t remove images, Extract to Drive’). This will save all the images in the document to your Google Drive.
