How to Insert Degree Symbol In Google Docs

Google Docs allows you to insert a variety of symbols in your document. One such symbol is the degree symbol. The degree symbol is used for showing degrees of temperature, hours, arc and more. If you are a math or science student, you will probably be using the degree symbol a lot.

It is easy to insert a degree symbol in Google Docs. There are several methods you can use to do this. In this article, we will be discussing the following.

3 methods of inserting a degree symbol in Google Docs:

  • Using a keyboard shortcut for the degree symbol
  • Inserting the degree symbol using the special character’s option in the ‘Insert’ menu
  • Automatically inserting a degree symbol by changing your Google Docs preferences

Method 1: Using a keyboard shortcut for the degree symbol

The first method involves using a keyboard shortcut for inserting a degree symbol. This is the most convenient method of all the 3 methods so we recommend that you use this one.

Step 1: Open your Google Docs document.

Step 2: Place your cursor in the location where you would like to insert the degree symbol.

The next step is to make sure that your cursor is in the location where you would like to insert the degree symbol. If you have a blank document, type out a few sentences before you correctly place the cursor.

You can do this by clicking on the location in your document where you would like the cursor to appear. You should now see the blinking cursor at the point where you clicked.

Step 3: Press Alt (or the Option key) and the 0 keys at the same time to insert the degree symbol.

Finally, press the Alt (which is also called the Option key on the keyboard of a Macbook) and the 0 keys at the same time. This will insert the degree symbol in your document.

Method 2: Inserting the degree symbol using the special characters option in the ‘Insert’ menu

The next method of inserting the degree symbol involves going to the special characters window from the ‘Insert’ menu. Here, you can find different kinds of symbols. These include symbols that are specific to certain languages (such as Greek or Latin) and mathematical symbols. You can just search for the degree symbol and click on it to insert it in your document.

The downside of using this method is that it takes more time and effort than the other methods. This method is useful if you want to insert other special characters/symbols, along with the degree symbol.

Step 1: Click on the ‘Insert’ tab at the top left corner of the screen.

The ‘Insert’ tab is located in the top left corner of the screen. Click on it to open the ‘Insert’ drop down menu.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Special Characters’ option from the Insert drop down menu.

The ‘Special Characters’ option is somewhere in the middle of the Insert drop down menu. Click on it to open the Special Characters window.

In this window, you can search for and insert various symbols in your document. There are 3 main ways of searching for symbols in the Special Characters window. The first is to type it in the search bar at the top right corner of the window. This method is useful if you know the name of the symbol you would like to insert. You can just type the name of the symbol in the search bar and press Enter or Return. The window will display some search results that you can choose from.

The second way of searching for symbols is by drawing them in the drawing box. This method is useful if you don’t know what the symbol looks like but don’t know its name. You can just draw the symbol in the box and some search results will appear in the window.

The last method of searching for symbols is by using the drop down menus at the top of the window. The first drop down menu allows you to choose the category of your symbol (e.g. punctuation marks, emojis, etc.). Based on the option you choose, you will be shown more drop down menus.

Step 3: Type ‘degree’ in the search bar and press Enter or Return.

We will be using the first method of finding and inserting symbols in our document. Just type ‘degree’ in the search bar at the top right corner of the window. Then, press Enter (or Return, if you are using a Mac). Doing this will display some symbols in the window.

Step 4: Place your cursor in the position where you would like to insert the degree symbol.

Click on the point where you would like the degree symbol to appear in the document. This is important to make sure that the symbol is inserted in the right place.

Step 5: Choose the symbol you would like to insert in your document from the special characters window.

From the search results, click on a symbol you would like to insert in your document. There are different types of degree symbols so make sure to choose carefully.

Step 6: Close the special characters window.

Finally, once you have inserted all the symbols you would like to have in your document, close the window. You can do this by clicking on the ‘x’ at the top right corner of the window.

Method 3: Automatically inserting a degree symbol by changing your Google Docs preferences

The last method of inserting a degree symbol in Google Docs is by changing the preferences. You can change your Google Docs preferences such that every time you enter a particular symbol, it automatically changes to the degree symbol.

The benefit of this method is that it will save you a lot of time and effort in the future. The downside is that it will be harder to use the symbol that you are replacing.

Step 1: Click on the ‘Tools’ tab at the top left corner of the screen.

The ‘Tools’ tab is located at the top left corner of the screen. Click on it to open the ‘Tools’ drop down menu.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Preferences’ option from the Tools drop down menu.

The ‘Preferences’ option is at the bottom of the Tools drop-down menu. Click on it to open the ‘Preferences window.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Substitutions’ tab in the Preferences window.

In the Preferences window, you should see 2 tabs: General and Substitutions. Click on the ‘Substitutions’ tab. Here, you can choose how you would like to replace certain symbols. For example, you can replace –> with →. This means that every time you type the first symbol (–>), it will automatically be replaced by the second symbol (→).

Step 4: Choose a symbol to replace with the degree symbol. Create an entry in the Substitutions tab.

Next, pick a symbol that you would like to replace with the degree symbol. This should be a symbol that you don’t use very often. One example of such a symbol could be `.

Then, create an entry in the tab. The first row in the tab is empty. In the first cell, enter the symbol that you would like to replace with the degree symbol. In the second cell, enter the degree symbol. Press Alt (or Option) plus the 0 key to insert this symbol. Here’s an example:

To save the changes, click on ‘OK’ at the bottom right corner of the screen. This will close the window.

(Optional) Step 5: Test whether the change works.

Finally, you can test whether or not the change in preferences works. Type the symbol that you chose to be replaced and press the spacebar. The symbol should automatically be changed into the degree symbol.
