How to Make a Family Tree in Google Docs

You can easily make a family tree in Google Docs using shapes.

We will show you in simple, step-by-step instructions how you can make a family tree.

Let us begin.

Step #1: Open a new document in Google Docs

Login to the Google suit using your credentials.

Open Google Docs.

Click on the multicolored + icon in the bottom right corner.

This will open a new document.

Step #2: Open a drawing canvas

In the top menu bar, click on the Insert tab.

In the menu that drops down, hover the mouse pointer over Drawing.

This will open another menu.

Click on New.

This will open a new drawing canvas.

Step #3: Open shapes menu

Click on the Shapes icon in the top menu bar.

Tip: Hover with your mouse over each icon to view their names.

A drop-down menu will open.

Hover the mouse pointer over Shapes to see the different options.

Step #4: Select a shape

From the shapes menu, select a suitable shape.

For this tutorial, we have selected the Rounded Rectangle.

Once you click on the shape, the menu will disappear and the cursor will change to a cross.

Position the cursor on the canvas where you want the shape to appear.

Click on the canvas, hold the mouse button down, and drag the cursor diagonally.

Release the mouse button, and the selected shape will appear in the canvas.

Use the handles (the blue blocks) on its border to change the size of the shape.

Click on a blue block, hold down the mouse button, and drag the cursor in the direction you want to block to change shape.

Step #5: Fill in the text

Double-click inside the shape.

A flashing cursor will appear in the shape.

Enter your desired text.

You can change the font type, size, and position of the text as you want.

Use the text controls at the top of the canvas to make text bold, italic or change the color.

Once done, click outside the shape.

Step #6: Make copies of the shape

Click on the shape once to select it.

Press CTRL + C on your keyboard to copy the shape.

Press CTRL + V on your keyboard to create a copy of the shape.

Position the new shape as you want.

Click on the shape once, hold down the mouse button and drag the shape to where you want it on the sheet.

Paste more shapes and position them as you wish.

Step #7: Change the text within the Shapes

Double-click each shape and change the text to suit your requirements.

Step #8: Add lines

Click on the Lines icon in the top menu bar.

Tip: Hover with your mouse over each icon to view their names.

The cursor will change to a cross.

Place the cross where you want the line to start.

Click and drag the cross while holding down the mouse button, to where the line must end.

Add as many lines as necessary to complete your Family Tree.

You may observe that when you bring the cross cursor close to a shape, purple dots appear. These are sticky points and you can make these the starting and end points of your lines, for a tidy appearance.

Step #9: Save the Family Tree

Click on the Save and Close button on the top right-hand corner.

The canvas will close, and the Family Tree will appear in the document.

Step #10: Name the Document

Click on Untitled Document in the top left-hand corner.

Enter a proper name for your document.

This completes the Family Tree.
