A form of text formatting style, hanging indent gets its name from the first line of the text being indented normally, while the indenting for the rest of the lines are more to the right. This type of indentation makes the first line appear as hanging over the rest of the lines in the paragraph.
Academic citation formats such as Chicago and MLA style often require hanging indents. You can add it to create an eye-catching text effect, and to emphasize particular text.
