How to Change Bullet Color in MS Word

MS Word allows you to place bullets against a list of text in your document. Bullets help to emphasize different aspects of the subject. By default, Word allows you a selection of seven types of bullets from a library. You can also choose to have no bullets when you choose None.

Method #1: Choose a Bullet From the Library

Step #1: Open Word document

Open your Word document.

Navigate to the place where you would like to introduce bullets.

Select the text where you wish to place the bullets, by placing your cursor at the end of the text, clicking and holding the mouse down, and then dragging the cursor to the beginning of the text. 

Release the mouse button.

Step #2: Pick a bullet from the library

Click on the ‘Home’ tab in the main menu bar to change the ribbon.

In the section ‘Paragraph’, look for the icon with 3 dots and 3 stripes, and click on the little triangle next to this Bullets (aka Bulleted list) icon.

This opens the Bullet Library.

Click on one of seven bullets in the library.

Word will then apply the chosen bullet to the selected text in your document.


Method #2: Define a New Bullet

Step #1: Open Word document

Open your Word document.

Navigate to the place where you would like to introduce bullets.

Select the text where you wish to place the bullets, by placing your cursor at the end of the text, clicking and holding the mouse down, and then dragging the cursor to the beginning of the text. 

Release the mouse button.

Step #2: Define a new bullet

Click on the ‘Home’ tab in the main menu bar to change the ribbon.

In the section ‘Paragraph’, look for the icon with 3 dots and 3 stripes, and click on the little triangle next to this Bullets (aka Bulleted list) icon.

This opens the Bullet Library.

Click on ‘Define New Bullet’.

This opens a dialog box for ‘Define New Bullet’.

Under ‘Bullet character’, Word offers three choices for bullets:

  • Symbol—Select a symbol from a symbol table.
  • Picture—Select a picture from your computer or the Internet.
  • Font—Select a Font from a Font selection dialog.

Click on the ‘Symbol’ button.

This opens the ‘Symbol’ dialog box.

Select Wingdings for Font, by clicking on the drop-down list.

Click on the symbol you want as a bullet.

Click on OK at the bottom to exit this dialog box.

Click on OK at the bottom of ‘Define New Bullet’ dialog box.

Word now applies the chosen bullet to the selected text in your document.


Method #3: Change the Color of the Bullet

Step #1: Open Word document

Open your Word document.

Navigate to the place where you already have a bulleted list.

Click on any bullet to select all the bullets.

Step #2: Change the color of the bullets

Right-click on any bullet.

This opens a new menu.

Click on the small triangle beside the ‘Font Color’ icon – a Capital A with a thick horizontal line underneath it.

This opens the ‘Color’ dialog box.

Select a color from Theme Colors or Standard Colors.

Click on OK.

Word changes the color of the bullets in your document.
