How to Create an Autocorrect Entry in Word

You may want to correct your entry as you type. Or, you may want to add new autocorrect entries to Word. You may also want to edit or remove an autocorrect entry.

We will show you how you can do all this in easy, step-wise instructions. You can:

Method #1: Add New Autocorrect Entry

Step #1: Open File Menu in Word

Open Word.

Click on the File tab in the top menu bar to open the File menu.

Step #2: Go to Word Options

In the File menu, at the bottom of the left pane, click on the Options button.

The Word Options window will appear.

Step #3: Open Autocorrect Options

In the left pane, click on the Proofing button.

In the right pane, under section Autocorrect Options, click on the Autocorrect Options… button.

An AutoCorrect dialog box will open for the dictionary you are using.

Step #4: Turn On Replace Text as You Type

Click on the AutoCorrect tab.

Click on to select the Replace text as you type button.

Step #5: Add New Entry

Under Replace:, type the wrong spelling you want to replace.

Under With:, type the correct spelling.

A list of words will appear below.

Click on the Add button at the bottom.

Your new entry will appear in the list of words.

Click the OK tab at the bottom to close the AutoCorrect dialog box.

Click the OK tab at the bottom to close the Word Options window.

Step #6: Test Autocorrect Option

Open a Word document.

Type a sentence with the misspelled word.

As soon as you hit the Space/Period key after the misspelled word, Word automatically corrects its spelling.


Method #2: Edit Existing Autocorrect Entry

Step #1: Open File Menu in Word

Open Word.

Click on the File tab in the top menu bar to open the File menu.

Step #2: Go to Word Options

At the bottom of the left pane, click on the Options button.

The Word Options window appears.

Step #3: Open Autocorrect Options

In the left pane, click on the Proofing button.

In the right pane, under section Autocorrect Options, click on the Autocorrect Options… button.

An AutoCorrect dialog box will open for the dictionary you are using.

Step #4: Turn On Replace Text as You Type

Click on the AutoCorrect tab.

Click on and select the button Replace text as you type.

Scroll down the list of words under Replace text as you type, until you arrive at the entry you want to edit.

Click on the entry.

The entry will appear under Replace:, and With:.

Click on the Delete button.

Step #5: Edit the Entry

Edit the entry under Replace:.

Edit the entry under With:, if necessary.

Click on the Add button.

Your changed entry will appear in the list of words.

Click the OK tab at the bottom to close the AutoCorrect dialog box.

Click the OK tab at the bottom to close the Word Options window.

Step #6: Test Autocorrect Option

Open a Word document.
