How to Create a Bookmark in Google Docs

If you have a lengthy document in Google Docs, you can make navigation easier by using bookmarks. Bookmarks make it easy to jump to preset points in the document. 

From the table of contents, you can directly go to a specific chapter, or to a bookmark in another document.

Method #1: Create a Bookmark with a Link within a Document

Use this method to create a bookmark and a related link within the same document.

Step #1: Open a Document in Google Docs

Open a document where you want to introduce the bookmark.

Navigate to and select the text you want to use as the bookmark.

Step #2: Create a Bookmark

In the top menu bar, click on the Insert tab.

This opens a menu.

Click on the Bookmark icon at the bottom of the menu.

A bookmark symbol appears next to the text selected earlier.

Step #3: Create the link to the Bookmark

In the document, navigate to and select the text you want to use as the link to the bookmark. Drag your cursor over the text to select it.

In the top menu bar, click on the Insert tab.

This opens a menu.

Click on the Link option.

A menu will open.

Click on the Headings and bookmarks tab at the bottom.

Another menu will open.

Scroll down to the BOOKMARKS section.

Select the appropriate bookmark from the displayed list.

The selected text will change to a link – it will change to blue and become underlined.

Step #4: Test – Use the link to reach the Bookmark

Click on the link you just created.

A menu will open showing the bookmark.

Click on the word Bookmark.

You will reach the corresponding bookmark for the link in the document.


Method #2: Create a Bookmark with a Link in Another Document

Use this method to create a bookmark in one document and a related link to another.

Step #1: Open a Document in Google Docs

Open a document where you want to introduce the bookmark.

Navigate to and select the text you want to use as the bookmark.

Step #2: Create a Bookmark

In the top menu bar, click on the Insert tab.

This opens a menu.

Click on the Bookmark option at the bottom of the menu.

A bookmark symbol appears next to the selected text.

Click on the bookmark symbol you just created.

A small menu will open.

Click on the Copy link icon.

The link address is now on the clipboard.

Step #3: Open a Second Document

Open a second document where you want to create the link.

Step #4: Create the Link to the Bookmark

Navigate to and select the text you want to use as the link to the bookmark.

In the top menu bar, click on the Insert tab.

This opens a menu.

Click on the Link option.

A search bar will appear.

Right-click within the search bar.

From the menu that opens, paste the link from the clipboard into the search bar.

Click on the Apply button.

The selected text will change to a link.

Step #5: Test – Use the link to reach the Bookmark

Click on the link you just created.

A menu will open showing the name of the first document.

Click on the name of the document.

You will reach the corresponding bookmark for the link in the first document.


Method #3: Remove Bookmarks From a Document

Use this method to remove any unused bookmarks.

Step #1: Open a Document in Google Docs

Open a document where you already have at least one bookmark.

Navigate to the bookmark you want to remove.

Step #2: Remove the Bookmark

Click on the bookmark symbol.

A small menu opens.

Click on the Remove icon which looks like a bin.

The bookmark symbol no longer appears.

Note: Use Step #2 to remove other bookmarks as well.
